Our first Charity single goes live this Sunday

For those of you who were at our Gala Dinner this year, you would have already heard our Charity single ‘Make you smile’ performed by Sara Kempe. This Sunday (29 April), Sara is releasing the double A side single which includes tracks ‘Angel Child’ and ‘Make You Smile’, on iTunes.

We would like to encourage everyone to download it as 30p from every purchase is going to our Charity, helping families stay together.

Sara Kempe

Sara Kempe was a McDonald’s employee before winning the X Factor style competition set up by McDonald’s. Since being named the Voice of McDonald’s in November 2011, the singer has been flown all over the world performing at Blenheim Palace, in the Middle East and Abu Dhabi in front of Royal Families and Nobel Laureates and has now booked to play a prestigious gig in the Olympic park.

Joining Katherine Jenkins, Charlotte Church, and Natasha Marsh on the long list of Welsh female operatic vocalists, Sara Kempe is a fiery-haired soprano who rose to the top of the classical charts thanks to an unlikely association with the world of golf. Born in Abergavenny in 1990, Kempe first began singing when she took up lessons to pass the time while attending a boarding school in Hereford. At age 15, she took a tea-girl job at a nearby recording studio in order to learn the ropes and work her way up through the music industry, and after performing at various clubs and corporate events, she was discovered by Sir Terry Matthews, owner of Gwent’s Celtic Manor Resort, and the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Kempe was asked to record the first ever official single for the golf event, “Let Me Fly (Where Dragons Fly),” which was used to promote the competition in its television advertising campaign. Soon after, she signed a deal with EMI, sang the National Anthem at the Welsh Grand National, and supported Aled Jones on his U.K. tour. In 2011, she released her debut album, Let Me Fly, a combination of original songs and covers of tracks by Snow Patrol, Sarah McLachlan, and Cyndi Lauper, while she also appeared alongside Paul Potts, the Priests, and Rhydian.

Jelly babies… get your jelly babies!

Apparently, what runners really want is jelly babies. I guess if you’re running for 26.2 miles, you’d need little instant bursts of energy along the way.

So yesterday, I headed down with some colleagues to cheer on Team RMHC at the London Marathon and hand out jelly babies. I was the one heard shouting “Jelly babies. Get your jelly babies. Over here for jelly babies.” What surprised me, is every runner that grabbed one took the time to say thank you.

No… thank you! We had more than 10 supporters take on the gruelling challenge to raise money for the Charity and help support families with children in hospital. At the last tally, they had managed to raise a combined total of over £36,000. It’s the least we can do to support you all on the day.

Whilst we were standing there cheering on runners for five hours, we saw some very interesting characters run past… a lady hula hooping, a gentleman playing the guitar, and the GB Hockey Coach dribbling a hockey ball. Amazing!

Here's one of our runners, Anne Roberts, before the race!

Well done to everyone that took part and a massive thanks to Team RMHC!!!

What an amazing journey for the Rainthorpe family

When Luke made the decision to climb 25 feet up a tree near his home in Farnborough, little did he know what the results of that decision would be.  Every member of his family, all wish that he had chosen to do something else; but he didn’t.  After falling the whole 25 feet to the ground below Luke was rushed to Kings College Hospital for emergency treatment.

Luke had an amazing recovery from his ordeal; beyond all expectation. After moving from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit into the general paediatric ward he was given a surprise visit by Olly Murs, an X Factor finalist, who was visiting the ward. Although no-one knew at the time, this was not going to be the only time that the X factor was to feature in Luke’s young life, but many things would happen before this, the first of which was Luke’s continued recovery.

Olly Murs and Luke

After a stay of more than 50 days, Luke was finally discharged from the Hospital, to continue his recovery, which remains positive, particularly with Luke’s return to school, which was a high point for Luke and his family.

Luke’s discharge at the end of July, meant that his parents, Peter and Diane, could finally return our Ronald McDonald House, which had not only enabled them to remain close to Luke throughout his Hospital stay, but had also allowed his siblings, Jack, Shaun, Imogen and Lewis to visit, which played a vital role in helping the whole family cope with this traumatic event.

The whole Rainthorpe family were deeply moved by the help they received from the Charity and arranged a host of fundraising events, the first of which was a charity auction organised by Luke’s maternal grandparents, Steve and Lynne at their local pub, The Thatched Cottage. This was closely followed, before Luke’s final discharge, with a 10 mile sponsored ‘Walk’ by a 27 strong team of friends and family, which included Luke, who happily enjoyed being part of the team, managing to walk part of the way! The Aldershot McDonalds restaurant saw the walkers off with a great breakfast, while the Farnborough branch supplied lunch before the team retraced their steps back to Aldershot. The event promoted the support of the local radio station and newspapers.

Following on from this Luke’s paternal grandparents, Paul and Stephanie organised a successful ‘Summer Fun Day’ to further help boost the family’s fund raising contributions even further. But now we are able to thank this young man who, despite his injuries has inspired so many, to do so much to help other families in need of a safe ‘Home from Home’. Being given the opportunity to join other Ronald McDonald House families in special VIP box at the fabulous O2 Arena ‘X’ Factor Live Tour on the 31 March 2012 was a totally unexpected event for the family. An evening that prompted the following words from his family:

“Am so happy Luke gets to go to the ‘X’ Factor Live Tour with his mum and dad. We are going to have one happy little boy when he comes home from school, with thanx to the rmhc xxxxx”

“Looking forward to next Saturday night when we go to the O2 to watch the X Factor Live Tour with Peter and Luke. Thanx again to the RMHC for making this happen and making our boy very happy xxxxx”

X Factor what an amazing night luke loved all of the acts :) xx

Diane, Peter and Luke at the X factor concert

We are more than pleased to be able to bring happiness to several families that have battled with ill health and are in need of some extra moments of joy.

We hope all our families will be inspired to fundraise and volunteer in our House. We welcome all the help we can get.

Xtraordinary night for our families

Last Saturday I donned my fab new shoes and headed out to meet some of our supporters at the 02 arena. They had entered one of our competitions and won tickets to see the X Factor Live Show.

But we didn’t give them just any old tickets. We like to treat our supporters well and so we managed to hook them up with VIP tickets to be hosted in the Nestle Professional corporate box with an unlimited supply of free food and drink and a perfect view of the stage so they could get a good look at their X Factor favourites from last year. Thank you to Nestle for their hospitality!

Everyone enjoyed the food; a clear highlight was the sumptuous selection of cakes, chocolates and cookies, which were extremely hard to resist!

Cakes and delicious treats!

The winners of the competition were Keith Pollard, who brought along his family who had just returned from visiting family in the Ronald McDonald House in New York, and Mark McAvoy who came with his partner and cousin. We also brought along Diane, Peter and Luke (aged 9) Rainthorpe (pictured below) who stayed in our Camberwell House while Luke was in King’s College Hospital.

Amelia Lily, Craig Colton and Marcus Collins were clear favourites among the crowd, and Luke was a big fan of Johnny Robinson. Then Little Mix took to the stage to perform the last few songs of the night and the crowd went wild. It was clear most of the audience had been waiting for them to come on stage and I must admit I found myself dragged along with the chanting from the crowd, especially when they took to the skies and flew over the crowd!

All in all, it was a superb night and I’m glad our families enjoyed themselves!

All roads lead to Rome…again

Sunday 18 March saw Ronald McDonald House Oxford return to Rome to take on the marathon.  This year we had a team of six runners fit and ready to take on 26.2 miles of twisting, turning Italian streets.

Our team consisted of Andy Boon, running his 3rd marathon in support of RMHC, David Engwell who is also running the London marathon for us in April, Xavier Rees, a good friend of Andy and David who has completed the New York marathon previously, and “The Ransome Girls”!

Kate Ransome spent a very long and stressful week in our Oxford House in July last year when her newborn son Reuben was rushed into hospital. Kate and husband Andy have had a busy year of fundraising leading up to the marathon, and have yet more plans to support us.

Rome was Kate’s 1st marathon, and she did herself proud by finishing in 4hrs 38mins. Kate was joined by her two sisters in law, Sarah and Rachel who also ran and finished in equally impressive times.

All six runners faced a course littered with cobbles, a few hills and temperatures upwards of 21°c. Starting with the iconic Coliseum towering above them, the runners set out on their 26.2 mile tour of the city, taking in sights such as the Vatican City, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps along the way.

The team have so far raised over £10,000 between them, and sponsorship money is still rolling in. This money will help us to continue supporting families who need our help.

If you would like to be a part of the team competing in the Rome marathon in 2013 or are interested in getting involved with any other events, please email the House fundraiser now: andrew@rmhcoxford.org.uk

A Mother’s Day to remember

What did you do for Mother’s Day?

Some of you probably enjoyed a nice family lunch, others a seaside walk and many relaxed in the comfort of their own home.

But that wasn’t possible for Sussex mothers Leighanne Cox and Corrine Crawley. They are staying at Ronald McDonald House Brighton, so we had a chance to catch up with them and find out more about their remarkable stories.

Both gave birth prematurely earlier in the year and will be visiting their little ones in the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Leighanne, who lives with her fiancé in Crawley Down, said: “Without the Charity’s help we would have struggled financially to make the journey on a daily basis and it would have been heartbreaking not to be with our children.”

Leighanne gave birth to triplets Charlie, Kasey and Millie prematurely after it was discovered that Millie had developed complications.

Kasey Cox

The three were born by Caesarean section on February 5 and they are expected to stay on the specialist ward until April 27. Leighanne added: “I am so glad that we will be able to spend Mother’s Day together as a family and celebrate my first year as a mum of three.”

Corrine, who lives with her husband in Seaford, gave birth to twins 11 weeks premature on January 25.

Charlie Cox

She said: “The twins arriving so early was a huge shock but we are over the moon about becoming parents.

“It was such a relief being referred to the home because I knew that it was going to be impossible to make the daily journey to the hospital when neither of us could drive.

“The team who work at the house have all been so supportive and meeting other mums in similar situations has been a great source of comfort and I hope I’ve made some friends for life.

“I am really looking forward to Mother’s Day when we will spend the day with Preston and Blake, my sister and my mum who will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day as a grandmother.”

Blake and Preston Crawley

Happy Mother’s Day to all mums!

Royal date for Valentine’s Day

Yesterday not only marked the all popular Valentine’s Day, but for Ronald McDonald House Charities, a Royal date was on the cards.

The Duchess of Cambridge visited Liverpool and during her visit she stopped at Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey. The House is the largest Ronald McDonald House in Europe. Since opening in 1993 with just 26 bedrooms, the House has expanded twice to accommodate over 16,000 families.

The visit marked the opening of another 15 flats for long-stay families.

Kate was greeted by director of the House, Jan Thomas, and introduced to various VIPs and to families who use the House on a long-term basis.

She was met by 10-year-old Ethan Harris, who presented her with a Valentine’s Day card he had made himself.

The card, on red paper with painted spots, included on the front a picture of his brother Carson who is receiving treatment in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Inside, Ethan had written the Duchess a poem which read: ‘You’re smiley like the sun, you’re bright like a star, you’re light when it’s dark and I love your spark.’

Kate was delighted and said: ‘Thank you, that’s lovely.’

Ethan’s family have used Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey since Carson, who will celebrate his second birthday on Sunday, was born premature. Carson has complex medical needs resulting from a heart problem.

Their mother, Kirsty Harris, 32, from Accrington, Lancashire, said: ‘Ethan has been up since 5am this morning, he’s been so excited. It was his idea to make the card and write the poem. I couldn’t believe it when I saw all the effort he went to. This is a day he will remember for the rest of his life.’

Kate also met Emily Welch, 7, who was somewhat star-struck when the Duchess said hello. Worried-looking Emily turned to her mother, and her mother told the little girl: ‘The Duchess doesn’t bite.’

Kate laughed and told Emily she had ‘lovely, cute eyes’.

Jan gave a formal welcome to the Duchess and said:

“Years ago the families of children in hospital were encouraged to stay away. Wonderfully, times have changed and we now know children make a better recovery when their families are nearby. We know some families will never take their children home but being here for the last few weeks and days makes the world of difference.“

Ethan then helped Kate unveil a plaque commemorating her visit, with the Duchess telling him: ‘Your name should be on this too.’ You can see a great picture of Kate with Ethan on the Liverpool Echo website.

The Duchess ended her visit by spending 10 minutes on a private visit to one of the new Ronald McDonald House flats with one of the families. Their daughter Emma (pictured) has been receiving treatment for a brain tumor and the family have been living in the House for two years.

The Duchess cited the new flats ‘a fantastic place’.

Corrie actress joins families for breakfast in Birmingham

I walked into our House in Birmingham yesterday to the smell of freshly made waffles. Phil, the lovely Assistant House Manager, was busy in the kitchen organising “Waffle Wednesday’s”, a weekly breakfast treat for families staying in the House.

This particular morning was much busier than usual, I was told by House Manager Libby, and you could sense the excitement in the air. Probably something to do with the visit we had arranged from actress, Debbie Rush, who plays Anna Windass in Coronation Street.

Debbie joined staff and families for breakfast, and was soon busy chatting away and signing autographs (she was very prepared with a stack of photographs to sign!).

For the Loader family, Debbie’s visit made the day extra special as they were celebrating 5 year old Michael’s birthday. The family have been staying in our House since May 2011 whilst their son Lewis is being treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Debbie said: “As a parent, I know that having a child in hospital is one of the most stressful things that can happen. By providing a place near Birmingham Children’s Hospital for parents to sleep, eat and cook, staff and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House help to make life just that little bit more bearable.”

It was a great day and I can’t wait to visit our Birmingham House again soon! Thanks to Debbie for taking the time to brighten up the day for our families.

A festive celebration for Tooting

On a very cold December day, friends of the Tooting House, members of the Charity and volunteers gathered in the cosy 8-bedroom Ronald McDonald House at the St George’s Hospital in London. Entering the warm and inviting hallway, we saw Jeanette, the House manager, rushing around to take care of last minute touches. She had planned many wonderful activities to celebrate the House’s sixth anniversary. Balloons were inflated and attached to the raffle box, the kettle was boiling and speeches were being rehearsed.

In the kitchen, a table full of nibbles and home-made cakes was waiting for the rest of the guests to arrive. Christmas decorations were everywhere, which made us quickly get into the festive mood. Shortly, we were joined by the Mayor for Wandsworth, Cllr Jane Cooper who drew the four winners of the Christmas Raffle.

Then we moved on to hearing from the Charity’s Director, Jon Haward, and from Jeanette Hill. They both thanked everyone for supporting the House, for donating their time and for raising much needed funds.

To everyone’s admiration, local businessman and McDonald’s franchisee, Kalpesh Patel, presented a £10,000 cheque to the Charity, the sum of which was raised through in-store fundraising activities. Needless to say, Jeanette was over the moon. This represents a great contribution towards the £80,000 needed to run the House every year.

We were very happy to meet a few families that have stayed in the House in the past. Steve and Natasha Paul from Horsham in Sussex came to support Jeanette and share their experience with us. The couple stayed in the House when their first born son Max was delivered 10 weeks premature at St George’s Hospital in November 2009. Max’s condition was so critical that Steve and Natasha were on 24/7 alert from the day he was born, over Christmas and into the New Year. Steve Paul’s speech was very moving and motivated us all to continue the great work we do to help families with children in hospital.

Finally, the Tree of Life was unveiled to acknowledge those who made a difference to the House in the last year by donating and sponsoring rooms. Then, it was time for the delicious refreshments that the volunteers carefully ‘sourced’.

We wish our Tooting House a very successful year ahead. Happy Birthday!
