Supporting families for 25 years
Ronald McDonald House Charities was founded in the UK and the first Ronald McDonald House goes into construction at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey, the largest Ronald McDonald House in Europe opened its doors to support families with children being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Originally opened in 1993, with just 26 rooms, the House has undergone two significant expansions and has welcomed over 16,000 families in its history. It now has a total of 69 family bedrooms as well as the extra provision of 15 family apartments for families that are due to stay for prolonged periods.
The 4th Ronald McDonald House was built in Brighton. Ronald McDonald House Brighton opened to support families receiving treatment at Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital the Trevor Mann Baby Unit. The House then relocated in 2007 to a new site in order to support more families. Ronald McDonald House Charities invested £600,000 in the relocation, and a further £300,000 to open a further 10 en-suite bedrooms on the top floor of the children’s hospital.
We launched our annual Gala Dinner fundraising event, hosted at Banqueting House in London. Since then, we have held the event every year, with tremendous support. This year, we celebrated our 25th anniversary and the event was huge, raising an incredible £250,000!
The 8th Ronald McDonald House to open in the UK was at Tooting, on the grounds of St George’s Hospital, London. Many families are transferred from Frimley Park Hospital and Royal Surrey County Hospital and use the facilities of this House.
Ronald McDonald House Moorfields was the 10th House to open and did so to support families with children receiving treatment at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Moorfields is the oldest and one of the largest centres for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world.
Ronald McDonald House Birmingham was the 13th House to open in the UK and was built to provide ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families with children receiving treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
The year of the VIP visits!
During 2012 the Duchess of Cambridge visited Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey, Ronald McDonald House Charities held a reception at Downing Street, hosted by Samantha Cameron and the Hollyoaks cast kicked off 1st birthday celebrations at Ronald McDonald House Manchester.
Ronald McDonald House Charities kicks off its first advertising campaign named ‘Little Box’ (WATCH OUR AD at http://bit.ly/1w75wT4) raising much needed awareness of our cause.
Ronald McDonald House Charities celebrated 25 years of supporting families with children in hospital by sharing supporter’s special charity moments online during the year. To celebrate 25 years of the Charity, we also had some exciting news relating to the very first Ronald McDonald House ever built in the UK. We celebrated our merger with the Evelina Family Trust ahead of the relocation of Ronald McDonald House at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.
For our 25th birthday, McDonald’s one of our biggest corporate supporters produced and aired a TV advert to celebrate its support of the Charity. ‘Dad’s Voice.’
Ronald McDonald House Southampton opened to support families with children being treated at Southampton Children’s Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital. The House is the 14th Ronald McDonald House to open in the UK after its expansion and relocation.
