Brixton man’s marathon effort to thank charity

Asa Bailey, 33, will be hitting the tarmac for the 13 mile Richmond Half Marathon to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Tooting, which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families who have children being treated at St George’s Hospital in south London. He will be joined by friends Alex Maude, Dave Nicholls and Dan and Hayley Rhodes.

Ronald McDonald House Tooting provided Asa’s brother Joe and sister-in-law Nina with a place to stay following the birth of their daughter Tuuli in September 2012. Tuuli remained under the care of doctors and nurses at St George’s Hospital for two months while she received treatment for a rare abdominal condition. Despite the stress of having a child in hospital, Joe and Nina were pleased to be able to stay somewhere warm and welcoming where they could cook, wash and get some much-needed rest near the hospital ward.

Asa says: “Ronald McDonald House Tooting was a huge source of help and support to Joe and Nina while Tuuli was in hospital. The free accommodation provided by the House made life just that little bit more bearable.

“Tuuli is now doing well and is recovering. Our family is very grateful for the help that Joe and Nina received and I was keen to do something to support the House. When I secured a place in the Richmond Half Marathon, I knew straight away that I wanted to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Tooting. The icing on the cake for me has been the speed and enthusiasm with which my good friends have got behind such a good cause”.

Donations for Asa and his fellow marathon runners – who have given their group the name “Ronald’s Runners” – are still coming in via a JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/ronaldsrunners

Notes to editors

1. Ronald McDonald House Tooting is one of 14 Houses in the UK run by Ronald McDonald House Charities, an independent charity which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation at hospitals across the UK. It enables seriously ill children to have their families close by when they are undergoing treatment and allows them to maintain a degree of normal family life.

2. The Charity opened in 1989 and in 2013 helped support over 7,000 families with children in hospital. The Charity relies on the generosity of supporters and fundraisers, including McDonald’s customers, without whom it would be unable to continue its work
