Colne mother takes on running challenge

A mother from Colne in Lancashire is preparing for a run to raise money for the charity that helped her while her teenage daughter was treated for a brain tumour.

Angela Maden, 37, will join hundreds of runners on Sunday (7 September 2014) for the Great North Run to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Manchester.

The House provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families who have children being treated at The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. It is one of 14 Houses in the UK run by Ronald McDonald House Charities – an independent charity.

Following a shock diagnosis, Angela’s daughter Louise Watson, then 14, was treated for a brain tumour at The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for three months from September 2013. During this time, Angela was able to sleep on a pull-down bed on the ward. Her fiancé, Tommy Slater, was given a place to stay at the nearby Ronald McDonald House – just a short walk from the children’s hospital – so that the family could stay together.

Now that Louise is at home and recovering, Angela wants to give something back to the House, which relies on donations, as a way of saying thank you.

She says: “Because of the seriousness of Louise’s condition Tommy and I desperately wanted to be close to her. Having a place to stay at Ronald McDonald House Manchester came as a huge relief. It was just a short walk away from Louise in hospital and meant that we had somewhere to shower, wash clothes and just gather our thoughts.

“Staff at the House were always kind and helpful and I am so pleased to be able to give something back – even if I expect to have sore feet afterwards!”

Angela, who has already raised nearly £500 for Ronald McDonald House Manchester, will have little time to rest after she completes her run. The following day she will swap trainers for textbooks when she begins studying at University of Central Lancashire for a nursing qualification.
