Mega marathon-a-month challenge for charity
An inspirational teacher is pushing herself to the limit in a marathon-a-month challenge to raise funds for the charity that supported her pupil’s family after he suffered severe brain damage.
Lynne Wheeler, who teaches at Ifield School in Gravesend, has already completed two marathons for Ronald McDonald House Charities - an independent charity that provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families with seriously-ill children in hospital – but still has to tough out ten more before the end of the year.
She hopes to raise £1,000 as a thank you to Ronald McDonald House Charities, for enabling the family of one of her pupils to stay close by whilst he was being treated at Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
The 13-year-old boy from Medway was admitted to intensive care last year after suffering from number of seizures which sadly led to permanent brain damage.
Lynne says: “Although I have been running for four years and have taken part in a number of other marathons, no amount of physical or mental training can quite prepare you for 12 marathons in 12 months. However, nothing can ever prepare you for when your child falls seriously ill, which is why I’m raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities and the fantastic work they do to keep families together during these difficult times.
“I had never heard of the Charity until my pupil was admitted to hospital; his parents told me that they wouldn’t have known what to do without the House or its members of staff.”
Lynne’s next marathon is the New Forest Ultra Marathon on Saturday 19 March 2016. To support her, visit: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LynneWheeler
Ronald McDonald House Charities is currently constructing a brand new 59 bedroom House for Evelina London Children’s Hospital which is just a five minute walk away from the wards and almost triple the size of the existing facility. Construction work is due to finish in the autumn.
