Planning granted for new House at Evelina London Children's Hospital

A planning application to build a Ronald McDonald House to accommodate families who have children being treated at Evelina London Children’s Hospital was approved by Lambeth Council on Tuesday 25 November 2014.

The new Ronald McDonald House will be built and run by Ronald McDonald House Charities and the project is being run in partnership with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

The approved planning application is for a 59 bedroom facility on a site located off Lambeth Road, just a five minute walk to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The new Ronald McDonald House will have communal living areas such as kitchens, playrooms, lounges and laundry facilities. The accommodation will be near the hospital and families will be able to stay free of charge and for as long as they need.

Construction of the new facility will start in summer 2015 with completion in 2016.

It will cost approximately £11 million to construct and a further £500,000 a year to run. Ronald McDonald House Charities has already identified £8 million to put towards the build of the House. The remaining money needed to complete the House will be raised via national fundraising, local support and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust will be making a significant contribution. Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity have provided the land.

We will be engaging the support and fundraising efforts of the local community and businesses in the area to raise £1 million towards the construction costs.

We already operate a 20-bedroom House near London Bridge to serve families with children at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. However, demand for accommodation already far outstrips supply and is likely to increase further in line with the hospital’s planned expansion and a wider geographical catchment in the south east and beyond. The House is also located some distance away from the hospital due to children’s services moving locations in 2005.

Further information will be made available as plans progress.
