Ronald McDonald House Edinburgh
Ronald McDonald House Charities is in early stage discussions with NHS Lothian regarding proposals for a 26 bedroom Ronald McDonald House that would be built on the top floor of the new children’s hospital. The accommodation would be made available to families free of charge and for as long as they need.
Plans are still being designed, however the House is likely to have around 26 en-suite bedrooms and communal areas such as lounges, kitchens, laundry facilities and a playroom.
Why is this important?
When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness or injury the world stops in an instant; nothing matters but healing that child. To get the best specialist medical care for their child, a family must often travel far from home and stay for weeks, months or even years.
A Ronald McDonald House means that hundreds of families each year will not have to worry about where to eat, sleep or wash. Their anxiety will be eased so they can focus their energy on caring for their child and making important decisions about their medical treatment.
About the new hospital
NHS Lothian has a vision to create a centre of excellence founded in Lothian's finest traditions of healthcare and medical research. It will allow the Trust to deliver the highest standards of care and pioneer new treatments. It will provide a safe, comforting and healing environment which promotes recovery and meets the needs of patients and their carers. This project will see a combined building constructed next to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, bringing paediatric care, specialist neonatal care, neurosciences and adult and children's emergency departments together on one site.
