Ronald McDonald House Charities Worldwide (RMHC) was founded in 1984, a decade after the first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia, in memory of McDonald's founder and children's advocate, Ray Kroc. The goal was to establish a place for families to stay with seriously ill children receiving treatment and nearby hospitals. This concept quickly spread and in 1989, McDonald’s in the UK took the decision to set up a sister charity to provide the same service to UK families.
RHMC in the UK is an independent registered charity providing Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It receives considerable support from McDonald’s, but has also forged links with other businesses and Hospital Trusts across the country to become the largest provider of family accommodation in hospitals and hospices in the UK.
At the heart of what RMHC does is the desire to support families while their children are in hospital. Having a child who needs to go into hospital can be a very difficult time for both parents and child alike. RMHC is able to provide support to parents and ensure they have somewhere to stay that is close to the hospital and available without cost. This means there is one less thing to worry about and parents can concentrate on their child’s care.
