John is two years old and lives with this mum and dad, Lisa and Gary near Brighton. In 2005 John was admitted to Royal Alexander Hospital for vital surgery to remove half of one of his lungs. Lisa and Garry were resigned to the fact that, despite their strong desire to be with John at all time, this wouldn’t be possible with only a chair to sleep to his bed in the Intensive Care Unit.
Whilst at the ward one morning Lisa and Garry where told about the Ronald McDonald House in Brighton, where they would be two minutes from their son’s side. With John in a critical condition in ITU, and terrified that he would wake up alone, being able to stay near him was invaluable for them, but also for John. What’s more, they were thrilled that, not only would they be near their son, they would be near each other rather than sharing the bedside vigil and crossing each other’s paths.
While John needed his parents, Lisa and Garry needed each other to ease the burden. Surprised at how homely and clean the House was Lisa commented that their stay enabled them to lead a normal life as possible during John’s time in hospital.
