In 2004 Lucy was admitted to King’s College Hospital, Camberwell for a biopsy on a growth on her brain. Unfortunately, further surgery was required when Lucy did not respond to treatment as expected. While Lucy was being treated at King’s, her mother, Linda, moved into the Ronald McDonald House, located just a two-minute walk from the hospital. When Linda arrived at the House she really did not know what to expect, but here she tells us what the House meant to her.
“I stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for about six weeks and it proved to be a real port in a storm. The House offered a safe place to keep our belongings, cook some decent food, and, more importantly, to try and get some crucial rest. I am not sure I could have coped for six weeks on a camp bed. I was allowed to come and go as I pleased and the staff were very supportive, but unobtrusive.“
“The Ronald McDonald House at King’s helped me to cope with Lucy’s illness, and keep our family together. My husband, son and Lucy’s grandparents could all visit and stay close whenever they could, this allowed all of us to support one another and keep our family unit complete.” Lucy is now progressing well and has achieved great results in her SATS exams, making all her family very proud of her.
