Construction company staff get on their bikes to raise money for charity

Employees from Willmott Dixon’s office in Cobham, Surrey, endured a challenging 69 mile bike ride from London to Oxford on Saturday 21 May to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The construction company is currently building the Charity’s new 59 bedroom Ronald McDonald House by Lambeth Palace. It will provide free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families with children being treated at Evelina London Children’s Hospital which is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The House will be just a five minute walk from the Evelina London Children’s Hospital meaning families are a stone’s throw from their child’s bedside. The Charity currently has a 20 bedroom House near London Bridge to serve families with children at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. However, demand for accommodation already far outstrips supply. The House is also located some distance away from the hospital due to children’s services moving locations in 2005.

A total of 12 people took part in the six hour cycle ride including employees from the Charity and so far they’ve raised £800. Cyclists began the marathon at the site of the new House and finished the journey in Headington, Oxford.

Chris Harrison, Willmott Dixon Framework Director in Cobham says: “Each year we invest over £2.5m in local causes to support society’s well-being; the community is in our DNA. Every year we do a huge charity event at the Cobham office for all staff and we are delighted that this time we could support the excellent work of the Ronald McDonald House Charities; we greatly appreciate what they do for families with children in hospital.”

Ronald McDonald House Evelina London is due to be complete in autumn 2016 after which a series of events will be held to showcase the House. The official opening is planned for early 2017.
