Kind hearted Devon mother raises money for children’s charity

An enterprising fundraiser from Paignton, Devon, has raised £700 for a charity that helps parents with sick children.

Harriet Keeling presented the donation to Ronald McDonald House Moorfields, the free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families who have children receiving treatment at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, on Thursday 20 February 2014. She was personally thanked by House Manager David Bonner and introduced to some of the families who are staying there.

Ronald McDonald House Moorfields, which has specialist equipment for blind and partially-sighted guests, is a cause close to Harriet’s heart. Her two sons have glaucoma and the family stay at the House when their sons are being treated at the hospital. In addition, Harriet was born with cataracts and has been a patient at Moorfields since 1971.

She raised the money for Ronald McDonald House Moorfields by holding several fundraising events – including a karaoke night, online auction and Valentine’s Day raffle – over the last two months. She also recorded a CD of her favourite songs and sold it at the events. The money raised will contribute to the running costs of the 10 bedroom house which last year helped 259 families stay close to their children in hospital.

David Bonner, House Manager at Ronald McDonald House Moorfields, says:”It’s extremely encouraging that families are getting involved with the fundraising. Hopefully Harriet’s efforts will encourage more to join in.”

Harriet, who travels from Devon to the hospital every six weeks for her son’s check-ups, says: “The House is a godsend to my family; it makes a huge difference in an already extremely difficult situation. It brings a bit of normality to your life, you can go there to unwind and be safe in the knowledge that you’re still very close to your child.”

2. Ronald McDonald House Moorfields is one of 14 Houses in the UK run by Ronald McDonald House Charities, an independent charity which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation at hospitals across the UK. It enables seriously ill children to have their families close by when they are undergoing treatment and allows them to maintain a degree of normal family life.

3. The Charity opened in 1989 and in 2013 helped support over 7,000 families with children in hospital. The Charity relies on the generosity of supporters and fundraisers, including McDonald’s customers, without whom it would be unable to continue its work.
