Mayor visits Ronald McDonald House Camberwell
Ronald McDonald House Camberwell, the facility that provides free accommodation to families who have children at King’s College Hospital, received a special visit on Thursday 24 April 2014 from the Mayor of Southwark – Councillor Abdul Mohamed.
The Mayor was welcomed to the 24 bedroom ‘home away from home’ by House Manager Melissa Kirk. He was taken on a tour of the House and shown its bedrooms, communal kitchen, lounges and garden, and introduced to one of the families who are able to stay at the House free of charge and for as long as they need to.
The Mayor says: “I was so pleased to be able to spend time at the House with the dedicated staff and the families who are staying with them.
“I was particularly impressed to hear more about the work of the House, which relies on donations and the support of the local community. Having a child in hospital is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a family. By providing somewhere safe and homely to stay near King’s College Hospital where parents can sleep, eat and cook, the House can bring some normality to families at a difficult time”.

2. Ronald McDonald House Camberwell is one of 14 Houses in the UK run by Ronald McDonald House Charities, an independent charity which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation at hospitals across the UK. 3. Ronald McDonald House Charities opened in 1989 and last year helped support over 7,000 families with children in hospital. The Charity, which this year celebrates 25 years of keeping families together, relies on the generosity of supporters and fundraisers, including McDonald’s customers, without whom it would be unable to continue its work.
