Valuable Volunteer

Liz Burr has been volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Manchester since 2012

“I first heard about Ronald McDonald House Charities through my husband, Charles, who is a Franchisee with McDonald’s. The restaurant chain helped co-found Ronald McDonald House Charities back in 1974 and since then, has adopted the organisation as their Charity of Choice.

We have been keen supporters of the Charity since McDonald’s restaurants were first established in the UK, raising money for Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey in Liverpool.

When we heard that a new Ronald McDonald House was being built in our hometown of Manchester back in 2012, we were eager to help. Just before it opened, we were at the House folding linens in preparation for the families who were to soon arrive, preparing bedrooms and helping to field all the enquiries that were flooding in from the Children’s Hospital.

It was fantastic to see how just giving up a few hours of my time helped families in need. As a mother of three healthy children, I can’t imagine what it must be like for your child to be in hospital.

After our time volunteering during the opening of the House, I approached House Manager, Mike Fairley and enquired about volunteering on a more permanent basis. Since then, I’ve never looked back.

I man the reception desk every Tuesday morning and love what I do. We work hard to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all the families that stay in the House during such a tough time.

Every week is different but the feeling I get from volunteering at the House is always the same. To walk out the door in the knowledge that, hopefully, I have made a small but positive impact on people’s lives is an amazing feeling.”
