About this house
Ronald McDonald House Southampton has 53 bedrooms to support families with children being treated at Southampton Children’s Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital.
In the last year at Southampton Children’s Hospital over 18,700 children were admitted for treatment and at least 2,400 families had to travel far from home so their child could get the expert care they desperately needed.
In 2017, the House helped 1,165 families stay close to their children in hospital.
As well as 53 en-suite bedrooms, the House has communal living facilities including kitchens, lounges, playrooms and a laundry room. This enables families to stay close to their child and maintain a degree of normal family life. Every bedroom in the Ronald McDonald House also has a telephone linked directly to the children’s ward.
The House provides families with communal spaces, meaning that they are able to cook meals together as a family or simply take a break from the ward in the living room areas.
About the hospital
Southampton Children’s Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital offer a wide range of diagnosis, treatment and support facilities for children and their parents. These include the Congenital Cardiac Service, which treats heart disorders and defects and the Fetal Medicine Unit, which treats women at high-risk of problematic pregnancies. Other children’s services include the Piam Brown Unit that provides oncology and haematology care, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The NICU unit at Princess Anne Hospital provides specialist care to full-term and premature newborn babies. The facility has 36 cots, 20 for intensive/high dependency and 16 for special care. It is one of the largest neo-natal units in the country treating around 750 babies a year from Southampton, Poole & Bournemouth, Chichester, Dorchester, Basingstoke, the Isle of Wight, Salisbury, Winchester and the Channel Islands.
"Having experienced what it is like to have a child in hospital, miles away from home I can honestly say that I think it is brilliant that Southampton General Hospital will have its own Ronald McDonald House. We are delighted to help celebrate the start of building works for a facility which will support families, like ours, when they need it the most."
